A bike tour of Bangkok...at night!

First off, it is undeniable, I do look like a geeky tourist biker. But believe me, there was nothing geeky about my night biking adventure...

The Velo Thailand advertisement for a guided night tour of Bangkok easily caught my attention: I love to bike, it was dirt cheap, I was going to learn from the guide...and off course, it was a night. The perfect little addition of adrenaline I need to be satisfied. 18:00, Saturday night, it was a go, 4 hours, 20 kilometers of fun.

And it was fun! Indeed, in a few words, the tour was...completely ridiculous! A group of four of us rode through unknown mysterious alleys filled with all types of obstacles, dogs, babies, cats, motorcycle, and food stalls, all the way to busy arteries filled with impatient drivers. Needless to say, I ringed my bell like a maniac! We crossed bridges to capture stunning night views of the city. We also visited a quieter part of town where houses are built on pillars on the river. It was neat to witness normal day to day life in typical thai houses. The sight and visit of holy temples at night was a surreal experience; the beauty of the gold shine on a black sky is difficult do describe (see photo).

The riding was...let's say challenging hehe. Think busier streets than just busy streets, think narrower than just narrow. At some point, as I was entering a part of the trail, about two feet wide with no fences to stop a potential fall directly into the river, it was clear to me "Veronik, you're nuts...". And then I also thought "And by the way, you brought Gabrielle into this, so you are also stupid" hehe

I, of course, loved the entire thing. It made me see a side of Bangkok I would not have seen otherwise; on a bike, at night, with a helpful guide. And as I laid my head on the pillow late last night, I dreamed of many more similar crazy adventures.

Love,

Veronik
